When the Holidays Won't Be Happy

Because--let's face it--sometimes they aren't.

There are any number of things that may be going on in our lives that cause slow or severe leaks in our happiness during this special time of year.  I don't need to list them all here, because, if your happiness is draining, you know it; and you probably know the reason.

I don't want to take a lot of your time here, so I'm just going to cut to the chase:  Choose joy!

Let me encourage you to make the choice that is always available to us, regardless of our circumstances and our feelings.  It's a choice that is difficult to make sometimes, but always worth the effort.

Joy isn't an emotion, so it is not happiness.  Joy is an attitude.  Joy doesn't disregard or downplay our feelings, but surpasses them.

To experience joy during this holiday season, whatever your circumstances or emotions may be, keep your eyes on the God of the universe.  However our circumstances look or feel to us, they don't change the fact that God never leaves us nor forsakes us, that He has a plan for our lives, and that He is the only One seeing the big picture.  The things we can't figure out are no mystery to Him, including the reasons He allows upsetting events in our lives.  Spend time praising Him for His sovereignty and constancy . . .

. . . and for the baby boy, His one and only Son, that He sent to redeem us.  Redemption is a beautiful, joyous word!
